Eifman Ballet to bring the new ballet The Pygmalion Effect to New York

On June 7, 8 and 9 Eifman Ballet performs in New York City. The audience has the chance to enjoy the Company’s 2019 premiere – The Pygmalion Effect. The performances take place at New York City Center. The dancers will give four shows (with matinee and evening performances on June 8).

The Company has been touring in New York on a regular basis with phenomenal success over the course of 21 years. Eifman Ballet debuted in one of the world’s major culture centers in April 1998. Then The New York Times called Boris Eifman the leader of modern dance art. “The ballet world in search of a major choreographer need search no more. He is Boris Eifman,” wrote Anna Kisselgoff from The New York Times. Eifman Ballet has visited the Big Apple 13 times since then. All tours had taken place at New York City Center, but in April 2018 the Company made its debut at famous Lincoln Center with Boris Eifman’s choreographic hit Anna Karenina. The dancers accompanied by an orchestra gave four shows to the full house.

The tragicomedy ballet The Pygmalion Effect is the 17th premiere that Eifman Ballet brings to New York. The works of Johan Strauss the Son formed the musical score of the production. Combining the expressive means of the psychological ballet and the plastique of ballroom dancing, Boris Eifman composed a surprising interpretation of the myth about the sculptor who fell in love with his creation. The world premiere took place on February 6 in St. Petersburg.

The performances in New York are the highlight of Eifman Ballet’s five-week tour in North America that started on May 9. The Company has already visited Toronto with Tchaikovsky. PRO et CONTRA, Chicago and Costa Mesa with The Pygmalion Effect that delighted both viewers and critics. Chicago Tribune described the production’s dancing as “brilliant” and “exceptional”. Before New York, Eifman Ballet is going to present its art to the theatergoers in Berkeley. The tour in Canada and the United States is organized by Ardani Artists Management, a long-standing partner of Eifman Ballet in North America.

It is worth mentioning that in June 2020, the Company will return to New York with the new choreographic version of the legendary production Russian Hamlet. The ballet about Prince Paul will premiere at Lincoln Center accompanied by the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Nikolay Alexeev, People’s Artist of Russia, who already conducted the orchestra during the Company’s performances at Lincoln Center in 2018.
